Absorption type mufflers can cause low pressure drop, and if low-pressure air is transmitted from a remote source, it can be installed at the air inlet with a filter. Filter manufacturers can provide some products that combine filtering and noise reduction.

High frequency intake noise can be treated with a simple absorption muffler. The perforated tubes of these mufflers pass straight through the outer shell filled with fiber media You can also use glass fiber mufflers on your car to achieve sound insulation. High frequency noise is treated with absorption type mufflers (two on the left), while low-frequency noise is treated with expansion tank mufflers or suspension type mufflers (two on the right).

The low-frequency noise at the inlet can be treated with an expansion tank muffler, but this will cause a greater pressure drop. Two or more empty boxes in the expansion tank or resistance muffler are connected by a small section of perforated pipe, which is designed similar to a standard automatic muffler.

The inlet and outlet noise of centrifugal compressors can be treated similarly, but positive displacement compressors require pulsation control. Both exhaust pipes can be equipped with a series muffler and pulsation suppressor (similar to a dual chamber resistant muffler).

Exhaust gas is generally directly discharged into the atmosphere, and its nozzle effect can cause high-frequency noise. A simple and economical air diffuser can be installed at the exhaust outlet to reduce the shear force between rapidly flowing gas and low-speed ambient air The noise of the electric motor varies with the type of motor. TEFC motors emit more noise at the inlet of the ventilation system compared to drip proof or other motors. Installing an economical motor muffler at the rear of the motor can reduce internal fan noise. This type of muffler is equivalent to fixing the acoustic ring in a thin metal can with a screw bracket.    

If the noise cover is not suitable, a fence can be installed on the compressor, sometimes called a nest mouth. This fence should be made of sturdy materials such as metal sheets or plywood, and then covered with acoustic absorbing materials inside. The maintenance door should be equipped with gaskets to achieve sealing of the fence, but the nest made for small compressors should be able to be lifted.

If possible, the entire compressor or compressor motor device should be enclosed. The opening of the fence should be tightly attached to the penetration to limit noise leakage. It is best to install a sealing gasket on the opening, while pipes and conduits can be filled with permanent elastic sealant.

The shell may vibrate and radiate noise, so it is better to use a curved shell than a straight one because curved surfaces with hard arcs are less likely to vibrate.
